x

In a tragic incident in Bangladesh's northeastern Kishoreganj district, at least 20 people were killed and many others injured in a collision between a freight train and a passenger train on October 23. The accident occurred when the freight train, heading towards Chattogram, hit the rear coaches of the Dhaka-bound Egarosindur Godhuli Express. The collision caused two passenger carriages to derail, trapping several people underneath the wreckage.

Rescue operations immediately began, with over a dozen units of the fire service working tirelessly to recover bodies and help injured passengers. So far, 20 bodies have been recovered, and it is expected that more will be found as the rescue process continues. Approximately 100 wounded passengers have been rushed to different health facilities for treatment. The authorities have already dispatched a rescue train with cranes to the accident site to assist in the recovery efforts. The cause of the collision is not yet clear, but an initial report indicates that the freight train crashed into the passenger train from behind, striking two carriages.

Three separate committees have been formed to investigate the incident. This tragic incident has disrupted rail connectivity from Dhaka to Chittagong, Sylhet, and Kishoreganj. However, after four hours of disruption, rail communication has been restored. The locomaster, assistant locomaster, and a guard of the freight train have been suspended following a preliminary investigation. The authorities are taking swift action to determine the cause of the accident and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims.
