The unexpected windfall came from scratch-off tickets given to them by their supervisor, Sheila Colter, as an alternative to the delayed gifts she had initially ordered. The decision to switch to scratch-offs turned out to be a lucrative surprise for the employees at their annual holiday party. Colter purchased $30 tickets for the team to share, and they won $50 from their first ticket. With the winnings, Colter decided to buy a $50 Millionaire Club Scratch-Off, which doubled their earnings to $100.

The team continued to play together and Colter used the $100 to purchase two more tickets. One of those tickets secured the group the game's second-place prize of $50,000. The lucky winners, Colter and employee Winnie Beckman, claimed their prize at the Kentucky Lottery headquarters. After taxes, they received a check for $35,750. Each of the 21 employees will receive approximately $1,750 from the winnings. Colter plans to use her portion to complete her holiday shopping, while Beckman will allocate the money to support her mother's medical care, as she was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

Not only did the employees benefit from this stroke of luck, but the store where Colter purchased the winning ticket, IGA Express in Bowling Green, will also receive $500 from the Kentucky Lottery. Colter expressed the significance of the win, stating, "It means a lot. This is going to help a lot of people."
