Pakistan is preparing to hold Senate elections in the first week of March next year, as per the announcement made by ARY News. The relevant authorities in the country have already initiated preparations for the upcoming elections. However, it is expected that the schedule for the Senate election might be released after the general elections. According to reports, 50 members of the Senate are expected to retire on March 11. Despite this, the total number of Senate members will remain at 96 as four seats will become vacant after the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Following the general elections, elections will be conducted to fill the 48 vacant seats in the Senate.
Elected members from national and provincial assemblies will have the authority to vote for the senators. Former President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, expressed confidence in the country's progress towards transparent elections. He also stated that his party, the People's Party, is fully prepared for the upcoming general elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has already announced that the general elections will take place on February 8, next year, and Zardari has reposed full confidence in the commission to conduct fair and transparent elections. He further claimed that the People's Party is the only political party in the country capable of contesting elections in any environment, and expressed hope that his party would emerge as the majority party in the elections.
In contrast, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Rana Sanaullah, stated that all political parties should be allowed to contest the general elections in 2024. He emphasized that the electoral process should involve the participation of all parties, while ultimately leaving the decision regarding the country's leadership in the hands of the people. The Senate elections in Pakistan will serve as a significant event in the country's political landscape, with expectations for a fair and transparent electoral process. Political parties are gearing up for the upcoming challenges, aiming to secure a majority and play an instrumental role in shaping the future of Pakistan.
