China Rejects US Remarks, Calls for Cooperation Amid Growing Tensions

In a recent development, China has responded to remarks made by a senior US official, stressing that it never bets against the US and has no intention to challenge or unseat it. This comes after US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo labeled Beijing as the biggest threat and not a friend during an annual national defense forum in Simi Valley, California. Raimondo urged lawmakers, Silicon Valley, and US allies to prevent China from acquiring semiconductors and cutting-edge technologies vital to national security.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin reacted to Raimondo's comments by highlighting that US President Joe Biden had previously stated that the US does not seek to halt China's economic and technological progress. Wang argued that Raimondo's remarks contradict this sentiment, further emphasizing that such statements would not gain the trust of China or the rest of the world. He claimed that these comments reveal a deep-seated Cold War mentality and hegemonic mindset within some factions of the US. China reiterated its position that it does not intend to challenge or overthrow the US, emphasizing the need for a correct understanding of China.

Chinese officials called for cooperation and the fulfillment of important agreements reached during the summit between President Xi Jinping and President Biden in San Francisco. They also urged the US to abandon its adversarial stance towards China, stop viewing it as an enemy, and avoid engaging in major-country confrontation under the pretext of competition. It is worth noting that the Xi-Biden summit, held on November 15, showed promise in reducing tensions between the world's two largest economies. Both leaders agreed to work towards a more constructive relationship. However, Raimondo's recent comments have generated renewed friction, highlighting the challenges in maintaining a stable and cooperative dynamic between the US and China.
