Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu visited Belarus on Thursday and announced that China would increase military cooperation with Russia's neighbor and ally. The visit comes as Moscow is deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Li met with President Alexander Lukashenko and stated that the purpose of his visit was to implement important agreements and strengthen military cooperation between the two countries.

While specific details of the cooperation were not disclosed, China and Belarus have agreed to hold joint military exercises in the coming year. Russian troops that were deployed in Belarus were part of the invading force in Ukraine, and Russian troops and weapons still remain there.

However, Lukashenko assured that China's military assistance would not be directed against third countries. He emphasized the importance of securing their states and people, and reiterated support for a multipolar world and the territorial integrity established after World War II.

China claims neutrality in the conflict in Ukraine but accuses the United States and its allies of provoking Russia. China maintains strong economic, diplomatic, and trade ties with Moscow. The visit by the Chinese defense minister is seen as an important signal not only to the European Union and the United States but also to Ukraine.

Analyst Valery Karbalevich suggests that China is showcasing its military interests and its intention to strengthen ties with Minsk and Moscow, including military cooperation. This visit also serves as a signal to Ukraine that the continuation of the war may push China to take a side.

Li's visit to Belarus is part of his six-day trip to Russia and Belarus, demonstrating support for Russia despite objections from Western countries regarding the war in Ukraine. This marks Li's second visit to Moscow since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During the 11th Moscow Conference on International Security, Li warned against using Taiwan to contain China, implying the United States.

China maintains that it is a neutral party in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and advocates for a peaceful resolution. President Xi has accused the US of provoking and isolating Russia and has supported Moscow in the condemnation of the war. Li affirmed China's commitment to maintaining world peace and stability in global security amidst chaos.
