A team of scientists at Korea University has used machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict the influence of microplastics on soil properties, revealing that different microplastic factors significantly alter soil characteristics. The study, published in the journal Environmental Pollution, represents a breakthrough in understanding and mitigating the plastic waste dilemma, as plastics not only fragment into tiny particles in the soil, but are also absorbed by plants, potentially entering the human food chain and causing health problems.

The team, led by Prof. Yong Sik Ok, found that different MP factors, such as type, size, shape, and dosage, significantly altered soil properties, with MP size being identified as a major factor that affects soil properties. The study’s utilisation of ML algorithms marks a groundbreaking shift from traditionally complex and resource-intensive methods for predicting and interpreting the impact of microplastics on soil properties. Prof. Ok, who is also the President of the International ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Association, highlighted the importance of this research in guiding corporate sustainability efforts, where plastic-related issues are a growing concern.

The application of ML techniques to this problem demonstrates the potential for advanced technology to drive sustainable practices and create a greener, more eco-conscious future. The findings of this study provide crucial data to support informed decision-making on plastic waste management and align with the global focus on sustainability and ESG principles.

Integrating ML insights to study the impact of microplastics in the context of ESG aligns with social responsibility, fostering sustainable practices with positive community effects. Corporations tackling microplastics pollution can not only reduce their environmental footprint but also build community trust by applying ML solutions, potentially creating jobs and driving economic growth in related fields. This research emphasizes the power of technology and innovation in addressing environmental concerns and striving towards a more sustainable and eco-conscious world.
