Geopolitical issues should not hinder the progress and discussions at the G20 Summit, according to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. After assuming the presidency of the bloc of emerging and developed economies, Lula emphasized the importance of joint action and cooperation to tackle the challenges of the day.

The G20 bloc was previously divided on the war in Ukraine, and a consensus on the New Delhi Declaration was only reached after diluting the references to the conflict. Lula outlined his priorities for the Brazilian presidency, including the need for coordination between the political and financial tracks and greater representation for emerging countries at international institutions such as the UN Security Council, World Bank, and IMF.

The next G20 summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024, and Lula plans to hold G20 meetings in cities across South America during his presidency. Lula congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts in highlighting the topics of interest to emerging economies and expressed gratitude for India's support. He also listed social inclusion, fighting hunger, energy transition, and sustainable development as key priorities for the G20.
