Austria and Germany have tightened security controls during Christmas following the detention of three people suspected to be involved in an Islamist network. Vienna and Cologne have increased police checks around churches, religious events, and Christmas markets citing heightened security concerns. Austrian authorities confirmed the arrest of four individuals, with three detained pending further investigations. According to the German daily Bild, one arrest was made in Germany. The suspects are reportedly Tajiks who planned to carry out attacks for Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), an IS offshoot in Afghanistan.

Vienna police issued a statement warning of potential attacks on Christian events, especially around December 24th. Security measures have been increased in response to possible terrorist threats. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser affirmed a firm response to any extremist threat and emphasized the seriousness with which the danger of Islamist terror is being taken.

Furthermore, there have been indications that an Islamist group was planning several attacks in Europe, with possible targets being Christmas masses in Cologne, Vienna, and Madrid. In July, a cell of suspected Islamists from IS-K was dismantled in Germany and the Netherlands. The individuals arrested at the time were reportedly planning an attack in Germany. The heightened security measures are indicative of the vigilance and proactive stance being taken by European security authorities in light of potential threats.
