Xi Jinping Calls for 'Diplomatic Iron Army' to Combat Western Influence

Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued a bold call to action for Chinese ambassadors, urging them to build a “diplomatic iron army loyal to the Communist Party. In a rousing speech, Xi emphasized the need for China to increase its international influence to combat what he perceives as attempts by the West to contain and suppress China. The President's remarks hark back to a more confrontational style of rhetoric adopted by Chinese diplomats since 2020, which had been less prominent this year as China sought to attract foreign investment for its weakened economy.

Ties with the United States briefly improved after Xi's meeting with President Joe Biden in November, but China is currently embroiled in diplomatic disputes with the Philippines and Japan. Xi also urged envoys to adhere to Party discipline, stressing the importance of creating a diplomatic force that is loyal to the Party, dares to struggle, and observes strict discipline. His remarks come amid a renewed disciplinary push following the removal of the previous foreign minister, Qin Gang, in July.

The President also emphasized the need for China to tell its story well and create an image of trustworthiness and respectability on the international stage. Additionally, Xi lashed out against the West's "bullying and hegemony," urging diplomats and officials to "carry forward our fighting spirit."
