In a groundbreaking development, 28 countries, including India, the United Kingdom, China, and the United States, along with the European Union, have signed a declaration highlighting the "catastrophic danger" posed by artificial intelligence (AI) to humanity. This declaration, known as the Bletchley Declaration, was signed on the first day of the AI safety summit hosted by the British government. The Bletchley Declaration acknowledges the potential risks associated with AI technology, including its ability to manipulate content and generate deceptive information. It emphasizes the need for international cooperation and collaboration to address these risks and protect human rights, transparency, fairness, accountability, and ethical considerations.

The participating governments have agreed to establish a shared scientific understanding of the risks posed by AI and develop risk-based policies to ensure its safety. This includes increased transparency by private actors involved in AI development, evaluating metrics, safety testing tools, and strengthening public sector capability and scientific research. India was represented by Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar at the summit. He emphasized the importance of AI in India's expanding digital economy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of international collaborations driving the future of technology.

The Bletchley Declaration has been hailed as a landmark achievement that brings together the world's leading AI powers to collectively address the risks associated with AI. The declaration, however, fell short of setting specific policy goals, and further meetings are planned to delve deeper into the issues surrounding AI safety. The involvement of China in the declaration is of particular significance, given the existing challenges in relations between the West and China on trade, security, and human rights.

In addition to the Bletchley Declaration, the G7 powers also agreed on a non-binding code of conduct for companies developing advanced AI systems, further emphasizing the global commitment to AI safety. Overall, the signing of the Bletchley Declaration represents a crucial step in acknowledging and addressing the potential risks associated with AI technology. It highlights the importance of international collaboration, transparency, and responsible development of AI to ensure its benefits are realized while mitigating harm to humanity.
