Winter Storm Blankets New England and Sierra Nevada, Prompting Warnings and Closures Across Northeast and West

A major winter storm has blanketed New England with heavy snow and freezing rain, prompting winter storm warnings and watches across the Northeast. The hazardous travel conditions have extended as far south as North Carolina. In addition to the Northeast storm, a Sierra Nevada storm led to a stretch of interstate closure and power outages in Reno, Nevada. More than 11,000 electric customers in California were also left without power. Massachusetts has seen over a foot of snow, resulting in power outages for nearly 13,000 residents. Coastal areas such as Boston received lower snowfall, with the city expecting only a few inches.

The storm is expected to continue throughout the day, with Maine reporting snow totals of up to 12 inches and strong wind gusts of 35 mph. New York City mainly experienced rain, but counties to the north and west recorded double-digit snow totals. Governor Kathy Hochul stated that two-thirds of the state is expected to receive 8 inches or more of snow. In the West, a winter storm warning was issued for the Sierra Nevada region, leading to temporary Interstate closures due to collisions and spinouts. High winds and heavy snowfall are expected in the region. Forecasters have also warned of another Northeast storm expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, which could bring heavy rain, flooding, high winds, and coastal flooding.

The storm has resulted in numerous transportation disruptions, with multiple highways closed in Arizona and snowy conditions in regions of northern and western New Mexico. In addition, there have been reports of snowfall and freezing rain in North Carolina and southern Virginia.
