Vice President Kamala Harris is refocusing her attention on abortion rights as Democrats gear up for the upcoming election year. She has planned a series of nationwide events, with her first stop scheduled for Wisconsin on Jan. 22, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion nationwide was overturned in 2022 in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Harris stated in a press release that she is committed to fighting for the fundamental freedoms of women and bringing together those who agree that every woman should have the right to make decisions about her own body, not the government.

The loss of Roe v. Wade was a significant blow for Democrats, and with no clear path to restoring nationwide abortion rights as Republican-led states enact new restrictions, Harris is determined to rally support for the cause. Democrats are resolved to make abortion rights a rallying cry in the 2024 election after successfully leveraging the issue to curb their losses in the 2022 midterms. Vice presidents typically play minor roles in election campaigns, but Harris is expected to be a key player next year.

Her leadership on the issue of abortion has been apparent, with her hosting over 50 events in at least 16 states with lawmakers, attorneys general, activists, and healthcare providers. The issue was also a focus of her recent college tour, where she visited campuses to speak to students. The upcoming events in her nationwide series are yet to be announced, but Harris's dedication to championing abortion rights is clear.
