The US Space Force has temporarily halted the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, over concerns regarding data security. According to a memo seen by Reuters, the ban, effective from September 29, was issued to Guardians, the name given to the Space Force's workforce. The memo stated that personnel are prohibited from utilizing AI tools, specifically large-language models, on government computers until they receive formal approval from the force's Chief Technology and Innovation Office. The temporary ban is attributed to potential risks associated with data aggregation.

Generative AI, powered by large language models that learn from vast amounts of past data, has gained significant traction in the past year, enabling the development of innovative products including OpenAI's ChatGPT. These models are capable of swiftly generating content such as text, images, and video based on a simple prompt. Lisa Costa, the Space Force's chief technology and innovation officer, highlighted in the memo that such technology has the potential to revolutionize the workforce and enhance Guardians' operational abilities.

Confirming the temporary ban, an Air Force spokesperson stated that a strategic pause has been implemented to assess the integration of generative AI and large language models within the Space Force's mission and the roles of Guardians. The spokesperson emphasized the aim to protect the data of service members and Guardians, labeling the measure as temporary. Costa revealed that her office has established a generative AI task force in collaboration with other Pentagon offices to explore responsible and strategic ways of utilizing the technology. Further guidance on the Space Force's use of generative AI is expected to be released in the next month.
