U.S. Slams Iranian Military Supporters: New Sanctions Target 20 Individuals and Firms in Financial Facilitation Network
The U.S. imposes new round of sanctions on individuals and firms allegedly involved in a financial network benefiting the Iranian military, targeting Sepehr Energy and others.
The U.S. government has taken a strong stance against a group of 20 individuals and firms who have allegedly participated in a financial facilitation network benefitting the Iranian military. In an effort to disrupt this network, the U.S. Treasury Department has imposed a new round of sanctions. The sanctions have far-reaching implications, affecting individuals and entities across multiple jurisdictions, from Hong Kong to the United Arab Emirates. Among those targeted in the sanctions package are employees, brokers, and purchasers associated with Sepehr Energy, an Iranian firm that is already subject to sanctions.
According to the U.S., Sepehr Energy operates as a front company for the Iranian government's oil sales, which are believed to fund destabilizing regional activities and support proxy groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The Treasury Department's statement asserts that these funds contribute to conflict and terrorism throughout the region. Despite these allegations, a representative from Sepehr Energy declined to comment on the matter when approached by the Associated Press. The U.S. sanctions aim to restrict access to American property and bank accounts for the targeted individuals and entities, effectively preventing them from conducting business with Americans.
Brian E. Nelson, the Treasury's under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, emphasized that Iran engages in illicit finance schemes to generate funds, exacerbating conflict and spreading terror in the region. The U.S. remains unwavering in its commitment to expose elements of the Iranian military and its complicit partners abroad in order to disrupt this critical source of funds.
The White House has stated that it has not yet found evidence linking Iran, the primary financial and military sponsor of Hamas, to the recent multipronged operation against Israel on October 7. However, in response to numerous rocket and drone attacks launched by militant groups against U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria since October 7, the U.S. has carried out strikes on Iranian-affiliated weapons depots in Syria in a retaliatory manner. These latest sanctions reflect the U.S. government's ongoing efforts to counter Iranian activities and disrupt their financial networks, aiming for greater stability and security in the region.
