US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Wednesday that the United States will be providing over $1 billion in new assistance to Ukraine to aid its counteroffensive against Russian forces. This assistance includes $665.5 million in military and civilian security aid. Blinken made the announcement during a press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in Kyiv. The aid package also includes support for Ukraine's air defenses and efforts to find alternative routes for grain shipments after the collapse of the Black Sea grain export deal in July.

This assistance comes as Ukraine has been requesting more help from Western allies and has been ramping up its offensive efforts against Russian forces since June. During the press conference, Kuleba emphasized that US assistance is not charity and thanked the United States for its support in restraining Russia's aggression. Blinken echoed these sentiments, stating that the new aid will help sustain the counteroffensive and build further momentum. Furthermore, Kuleba expressed gratitude to the United States for allowing other countries to transfer their F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine to protect its skies.

Blinken's visit to Kyiv, his fourth since Russia's invasion, coincided with a Russian strike on a market in Donetsk that killed seventeen people and injured dozens. The United States has provided Ukraine with over $40 billion in security assistance since Russia invaded last year, including vital weapons for pushing back Russian forces. With this new billion-dollar aid package, the US is reaffirming its commitment to standing by Ukraine's side in its fight against Russian aggression.
