In a recent incident off the coast of Yemen, the United States detained five individuals suspected to be Somali nationals after they boarded a tanker ship, according to the Pentagon. The armed individuals were aboard the M/V Central Park tanker, which is linked to an Israel-affiliated company. In response to the situation, a US destroyer and allied ships demanded the vessel's release, prompting the armed individuals to flee via a small boat. The USS Mason destroyer pursued the attackers, leading to their eventual surrender.

Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder confirmed that initial indications suggest that these individuals are Somali, describing the incident as clearly piracy-related. The armed individuals boarded the ship on Sunday and attempted to access the crew cabin, but the crew managed to lock themselves in a safe area. Shortly after the attempted ship seizure, two ballistic missiles were launched from an area controlled by Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen. These missiles landed approximately 10 nautical miles from the Mason and Central Park, causing no damage to the ships.

However, the Pentagon declined to speculate on whether the two incidents were linked. The Huthis have been launching a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel since the unprecedented attack by Hamas militants on October 7. The Israeli authorities claim that this attack resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people. Gaza's Hamas government, on the other hand, states that about 15,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israeli aerial bombardment and ground operations since the start of the war.

These deaths have sparked widespread anger in the Middle East and have served as motivation for armed groups opposing both the United States and Israel to carry out attacks against American troops in the region. The details surrounding these incidents are still under investigation, and it remains to be seen whether there are any connections between the armed individuals' boarding of the tanker ship and the missile launch. The United States continues to monitor the situation and work towards maintaining security and stability in the region.
