In a significant escalation of tensions between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian drones have been blamed for a major attack on a Russian air base. Satellite images analyzed by the Associated Press (AP) show that suspected Ukrainian drone attacks destroyed at least two Ilyushin Il-76 military transport planes at Princess Olga Pskov International Airport, located near the Russian border. The images revealed the blackened hulks of the planes on separate parking pads, with fire damage evident. This attack follows a series of daily drone incursions into Russia, which have become more frequent and reached deeper into the country in recent months.

Russian officials confirmed that air defenses intercepted drones heading towards three western regions of the country, namely Kursk, Belgorod, and Moscow. Moscow airports briefly halted flights as a precaution, but no significant damage or injuries were reported. The drones are part of an apparent Ukrainian strategy to unnerve Russia and put pressure on President Vladimir Putin. However, Kyiv officials neither confirm nor deny responsibility for the attacks. The AP was unable to verify whether the drones were launched from Ukraine or from within Russia itself.

The use of drones by Ukraine is thought to be an attempt to counter Russia's military aggression and destabilize the region. The AP analysis of satellite images also revealed that the target of the attack was the Russian military's Ilyushin Il-76, a four-engine military transport plane renowned for its ability to operate in rugged conditions. The blackened wreckage of the aircraft was visible on the apron of the air base, suggesting a deliberate targeting. The attack on the air base comes just weeks after Russia broke off a deal brokered by Turkey and the United Nations that allowed Ukrainian grain to reach global markets safely.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to host Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan for talks in Sochi next week, raising speculation that the meeting could help revive the Black Sea Grain Initiative. This initiative aimed to facilitate the shipment of grain from Ukraine through Turkish ports to countries facing food shortages. Ukraine and Russia are major global suppliers of essential commodities such as wheat, barley, and sunflower oil, which are crucial for developing nations. The breakdown of the deal has hampered Russia's agricultural exports, although the country has still shipped record amounts of wheat.

Efforts to revive the agreement have so far been unsuccessful, with Russia demanding certain actions from the West before allowing Ukraine's Black Sea exports to resume. The situation between Ukraine and Russia remains tense, with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claiming that his country has developed a weapon capable of hitting a target 700 kilometers away. While the details of this weapon are unclear, it further underscores the potential for further escalation in the conflict. As tensions continue to rise, international efforts to find a peaceful resolution and mitigate the humanitarian impact on the region remain paramount.
