On Thursday, Brazil's top electoral court began hearing a case against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of abusing his office and misusing state media. Prosecutors argue that a meeting held by Bolsonaro three months before the 2022 elections, in which he made unfounded claims about the electronic voting system, violated electoral law. It remains to be seen how Brazil's political landscape will be shaped further by the court's verdict especially after Bolsonaro's defeat in the 2022 elections.

The case was filed by Brazil's Democratic Labor Party. Bolsonaro is not attending the trial in Brasilia, and instead is currently in the southern city of Porto Alegre for a transportation fair and event of his Liberal Party.

The court’s nine members will be able to decide whether to bar Bolsonaro from running in future elections, impose a fine, or even suspend him from office. The whole story had a huge impact upon Bolsanaro as he lost the 2022 elections to left-wing rival President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.. If the court findings come in favor of the Democratic Labor Party, it will be a major blow to Bolsonaro’s political career as Brazil will go to polls in 2026.

In comments made on his YouTube channel, Bolsonaro said that he would be deprived of his "political rights” if barred from office. The nine members of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), which is responsible for overseeing electoral processes in Brazil, will decide whether to bar Bolsonaro from running in future elections, impose a fine, or even suspend him from office. Bolsonaro's political future remains uncertain. He has insisted that the broadcast did not constitute an "attack” on the voting system, and has vowed to remain active in politics. Regardless of the outcome of the case, the TSE's decision will be closely watched by the Brazilian people and the international community. It remains to be seen how Brazil's political landscape will be shaped further by the court's verdict espcially after Bolsonaro's defeat in the 2022 elections.
