Cuellar recounted the incident, stating that three armed assailants approached him and demanded his car. Despite having a black belt, Cuellar recognized the danger and calmly handed over his vehicle. The congressman's car, along with his phone and other belongings, was recovered within two hours. The assailants were described as young individuals wearing masks.

The carjacking took place in Southeast D.C., near the Navy Yard neighborhood, and was reported to the D.C. Metropolitan Police and U.S. Capitol Police. The investigation has been taken over by Capitol Police. Cuellar's chief of staff expressed gratitude to the local law enforcement agencies for their swift response and successful recovery of the stolen vehicle. This incident highlights the alarming increase in carjackings in Washington, D.C., with a reported 750 incidents this year alone, nearly double the number from the previous year.

Concerns about the safety of public officials and residents in the city have been growing. This comes after Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota experienced an attack in her Washington apartment's elevator in February.
