Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko is facing a lawsuit as President Vladimir Putin increases pressure on wealthy citizens to repatriate their assets amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Melnichenko, the founder of Russia's largest steam coal miner Suek JSK and fertilizer maker EuroChem Group AG, has been targeted by Russian prosecutors along with two other companies. Putin has been vocal about his desire for Russian businessmen to bring their assets back to the country, asserting that those who keep their wealth abroad will be considered "second-class strangers" despite their acquired titles. This push comes in the aftermath of heavy sanctions imposed on Russia by the West following its invasion of Ukraine, which has had a detrimental impact on the country's economy.

The specific case against Melnichenko relates to energy assets that companies linked to him purchased from businesses associated with former minister Mikhail Abyzov in 2018. Abyzov was arrested and charged with embezzlement in 2019. Melnichenko, who currently resides in the United Arab Emirates after living in Europe for many years, has received the lawsuit and a hearing is scheduled for September 7.

With an estimated net worth of $13 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Melnichenko was previously sanctioned by both the European Union and the United States in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine. He later relinquished his status as a beneficiary of a trust controlling stakes in his founded companies. His wife, Serbian singer Sandra Nikolic, who is an EU citizen, then became the beneficiary and was subsequently sanctioned as well.

As tensions continue to escalate between Russia and the West, it remains to be seen how Melnichenko's case will unfold and whether other wealthy Russians will heed Putin's call to repatriate their assets.
