Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his enthusiasm for strengthening military ties with Beijing during a meeting with a senior Chinese general in Moscow. This move comes as Russia seeks allies in the face of its ongoing offensive in Ukraine. Putin conveyed to Zhang Youxia, a high-ranking general and vice chairman of Beijing's Central Military Commission, that their contacts in the military and military-technology fields are becoming increasingly important.

In his televised remarks, Putin emphasized that Russia and China are not attempting to build a Cold War-style military alliance, but rather, their cooperation serves as a significant factor in stabilizing the global situation. Putin also highlighted the United States' efforts to enhance its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region, clarifying that Russia and China will react calmly and carefully by strengthening their defense capabilities. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, along with a Chinese military delegation, warmly received Zhang in a red-carpet ceremony held in Moscow.

During the meeting, Zhang affirmed his intentions to further strengthen military-technical cooperation with Russia, as reported by the Russian state TV broadcast. This exchange follows Putin's visit to Beijing three weeks ago, marking a rare trip abroad for the Russian President. Beijing has become a crucial political and economic ally for Moscow, particularly as Russia faces international isolation. Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have consistently presented a united front against the West, with the two countries signing a strategic partnership just days before Russia launched its offensive in Ukraine last February. Since then, the nations have conducted numerous joint military drills. The increasing military ties between Russia and China serve as a testament to their growing alliance in the face of geopolitical challenges. As both countries seek to counterbalance the influence of the United States and strengthen their own defense capabilities, their partnership is evolving into a key factor in shaping the global power dynamics.
