Pope Francis has publicly denounced the recent burning of the Islamic holy book, the Quran, in Sweden. He expressed his anger and disgust at such acts and reminded the world of the need to respect books that are held as sacred. The incident occurred when an individual identified as Salwan Momika deliberately set fire to a copy of the Quran under police protection outside Stockholm Mosque, in Sweden.

His provocative act occurred on Eid al-Adha, one of the most important Islamic festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide. The incident has been met with widespread condemnation from across the Islamic world, including countries such as Türkiye, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Senegal, Morocco and Mauritania. This is not the first time that the Quran has been burned in Sweden, as a far-right politician set fire to a copy of the book outside the Turkish Embassy in January of this year.

In response to these events, Pope Francis has pointed out the importance of respecting the beliefs of others. He stated that freedom of speech should never be used as a means to disrespect any religion. He also reminded the world that books considered sacred by their authors must be respected out of respect for their believers. The pope’s remarks urge us to consider the importance of safeguarding religious freedom and respecting the beliefs and sacred texts of all religions. His message demonstrates a deep understanding of the importance of mutual respect and the need to protect the sacred books of all faiths.
