Pope Francis Urges Global AI Treaty: Protecting Humanity in an Era of Technological Chaos
Pope Francis urges global treaty on ethical use of AI, citing risks such as disinformation and interference in elections. Calls for regulation to ensure AI is guided by compassion and human rights.
Pope Francis has called for a global treaty on the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that the risks posed by technology lacking human values are too great. In a six-page message ahead of the Catholic Church's World Day of Peace, Francis emphasized the dangers of AI, including disinformation, interference in elections, and decision-making without clear responsibility. He cautioned that those designing algorithms and digital technologies cannot be assumed to act ethically, calling for an international treaty to regulate AI development and usage.
Concerns about AI have grown following advances in generative AI and deepfake imagery. The European Union is working on comprehensive legislation in this area, while China has already implemented regulations. US President Joe Biden issued an executive order on AI safety standards in October. The Pope's appeal reflects the need for AI to be guided by compassion, morality, and human rights.
