Poland Responds to Russian Bombardment with Fighter Jet Activation
Poland activates fighter jets to protect against intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine, amidst mounting tension at the border. Ukraine's President vows Russia will be held accountable.
Poland has taken decisive action in response to intensified Russian bombardment in Ukraine, activating its fighter jets to protect its airspace against potential threats, according to CNN. The activation of two pairs of F-16 fighter jets and an allied air tanker came after Russia launched a deadly missile attack on Ukraine, targeting the capital Kyiv and the eastern Kharkiv region. The Polish Operational Command reported intensive long-range aviation activity of the Russian Federation, leading to the activation of the fighter jets stationed at bases in Lask and Krzesiny to ensure the safety of Polish airspace.

A week prior to this activation, the Polish military believed a Russian missile had entered and left Polish airspace. The Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland summoned Russia's charge d'affaires to request an explanation, which Russia declined to provide without concrete evidence. In response to Russia's continued missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, Polish fighter jets were activated again as Russia mounted another heavy attack, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries. Russia's purpose was said to be targeting Ukraine's military-industrial complex, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, vowing for Russia to be held accountable for every life taken. The tension at the border between Poland and Ukraine has been a significant concern, as the Polish military previously reported an unidentified airborne object entering its airspace from Ukrainian territory, suspected to be a Russian missile. The activation of fighter jets by Poland serves as a clear indication of the ongoing threat posed by Russia's aggressive actions in the region.
