Thailand's leading prime ministerial candidate Pita Limjaroenrat is uniting supporters in the capital ahead of a parliamentary vote next week that will decide the future of the country. Pita, the leader of the progressive Move Forward Party, is facing an uncertain path to the premiership despite scoring a stunning victory in the May elections.

He needs to secure support from an unelected Senate in order to replace the incumbent Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. The election results saw Mr. Pita's eight-party alliance secure 312 seats in parliament, but he requires at least 376 votes in a joint sitting of the bicameral legislature, which includes the 250-member upper house appointed during military rule.

In order to do this, he is holding talks to ask the senators to vote for democracy, for the majority and to return normalcy to Thai politics. The election of Pita Limjaroenrat is seen as a major shift in Thai politics, with supporters hoping for a better future for their country.

On Sunday, Mr. Pita addressed orange-clad supporters in the capital, urging them to come together to move forward. Jaturong Soisri, a 28-year-old supporter, said that the upcoming vote "will decide where our future will lead. We have to unite together."
