Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Associates Face Death Penalty for Alleged Attacks on Government and Military: Groundbreaking Charges Unveiled
Imran Khan, former Pakistani Prime Minister, and other suspects have been charged with criminal conspiracy for their alleged involvement in attacks on government and military assets, facing a maximum penalty of death.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and other detained suspects have been charged with criminal conspiracy for their alleged involvement in the attacks on government and military assets in May. The charges carry a maximum penalty of death. Khan, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was arrested on May 9 on corruption charges but was later released on bail.
The anti-government protests that followed his arrest resulted in widespread damage to military installations and government buildings. Over 100 vehicles of police and security agencies were also set on fire during the riots. Khan and hundreds of PTI leaders and workers have been accused of attacking Lahore Corps Commander House and Askari Tower. The charges include inciting supporters to attack military and state installations.
In addition to criminal conspiracy, Khan will face nine other offenses, including provocation with intent to cause a riot and attempting to wage war against Pakistan. The case will be submitted to the Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore. Khan has been in Attock Jail since August 2023 after being arrested in a separate case. He is seeking post-arrest bail in that case as well.
