Newborn baby found abandoned in freezing temperatures in London, wrapped in a towel in a shopping bag. Police appeal for mother to come forward.
A newborn baby girl in London is in the hospital after being found wrapped in a towel in a shopping bag on a freezing street. The baby was found by a person walking their dog in Newham, east London, just after 2100 GMT on Thursday, during subzero temperatures in the capital. According to the national weather service, it was minus 3 degrees Celsius at the time. The person who found the baby girl kept her warm until London Ambulance Service paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital where it was confirmed that she was not injured in any way. Chief Superintendent Simon Crick praised the actions of the passers-by for thinking fast and saving the baby's life.
The police are now appealing for the mother of the newborn to come forward, as they are concerned for her welfare and believe she will be in need of urgent medical attention. They stated that they are extremely concerned for her welfare as she would have been through a traumatic ordeal and will be in need of immediate medical attention following the birth. London has been experiencing a cold snap this week, with temperatures plunging below 0 degrees Celsius. The Metropolitan Police have urged anyone with information to come forward to help trace the baby's mother.
