The Mexican state of Chiapas has been facing an alarming security situation in recent days, with the kidnapping of 14 administrative employees of the state security ministry by an armed group in the southern part of the state. The incident took place on Tuesday, approximately 34.4km (22 miles) west of the state capital Tuxtla Gutierrez, on the highway connecting it to the town of Ocozocoautla. The state security ministry stated that those kidnapped were all male employees who worked in administration in a police station.

The motive for the kidnapping is yet to be determined, but the incident has caused a great deal of concern in the area. In response, federal and state agents have been involved in the search for the missing employees. Videos of the alleged kidnapping have been released by Mexican news outlets, showing several vehicles stopped on the highway with their doors open and men in bulletproof vests pointing guns at the passengers in the vehicles. The state prosecutor’s office is investigating the authenticity of the videos, which also showed at least three trucks blocking the highway.

According to Reforma newspaper, the armed men took the employees’ mobile phones away and ordered them to lie on the ground, while allowing the women in the group to walk free. The situation in Chiapas has been further strained by the recent shooting attack that injured an official with the Attorney General’s Office and killed the person who was with her. The attack occurred the day before President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s tour of Chiapas, during which he minimized the violence in the area, saying that in general there was “peace, there is tranquility” in the state.
