Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell experienced a brief health scare during a weekly Republican leadership news conference on Wednesday. While discussing an annual defense policy bill, McConnell suddenly stopped speaking and remained silent for 19 seconds. Concerned colleagues asked if he was alright, and Senator John Barrasso, a doctor and top McConnell deputy, walked him away from the cameras.

McConnell later returned to the news conference and assured reporters that he was fine and able to fulfill his duties. McConnell had previously suffered a concussion and minor rib fracture after falling and hitting his head in March. Despite the incident, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated that there were no concerns about McConnell's health during a subsequent meeting. McConnell's health has raised questions among his colleagues, but they have expressed their support for him.
