Massive Disturbance Mars Kabaddi Tournament in Derby: Four Arrested After Gunshots, Swords, and Machetes

 Four men have been arrested following a large-scale disturbance at a kabaddi tournament in Derby, England. The incident, which involved the British Punjabi community, resulted in four people being injured. Videos circulating on social media show a chaotic scene, with gunshots, and individuals fighting with swords, rods, and machetes.

Armed police quickly responded to the scene and the arrested men, aged between 24 and 38, are being held on suspicion of possession of a firearm and violent disorder. The tournament, organized by the England Kabaddi Federation UK (EKF), was taking place at Elvaston Lane in Alvaston, Derby.

The EKF expressed their condolences to those affected by the incident and emphasized that the individuals involved did not gain access to the playing area. They believe the violence was a result of a pre-arranged fight between rival gangs unconnected to the EKF.

However, concerns have been raised about the impact of these incidents on the reputation of kabaddi and its appeal to the younger generation. This is not the first time that violence has occurred at a kabaddi event in the UK.

In 2007, a man was jailed for chopping off the fingers of a security guard with a sword at a tournament in Gravesend. The EKF had also faced visa restrictions on non-EU kabaddi players in the past, but the situation was resolved in 2019.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident and are encouraging anyone with footage to come forward. The police presence in the area will continue to ensure community safety. The Derby City Council leader expressed sadness at the incident and offered support to those affected.

Witnesses reported that a group of uninvited individuals with weapons arrived at the event, causing chaos among the attendees. The incident has raised questions about security measures at kabaddi events and the presence of illegal substances and weapons.

The EKF and other governing bodies are urged to address these concerns to maintain the sport's integrity and ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
