Starting from Thursday, a special 50 pence coin commemorating King Charles III's Coronation will enter circulation across the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint has announced that 5 million of these coins will be distributed to Post Offices and bank branches nationwide.

This release marks the second appearance of a 50p coin featuring King Charles III's official portrait, following a memorial coin that entered circulation in December of the previous year.

The design on the new coin showcases Westminster Abbey, the iconic site of the King's Coronation, on the reverse side. The center of the design features the King's official cypher, symbolizing his crowning at the Abbey. The obverse side of the coin features the King's official portrait, which was designed by renowned sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by King Charles III.

All 50p coins entering circulation will depict the King's uncrowned portrait, distinguishing them from the commemorative Coronation coins introduced earlier in the year. The Royal Mint has expressed the significance of this occasion, stating that it allows the public to find a piece of history in their change.

The release of this coin follows the introduction of a commemorative coin collection earlier in the year, which has gained popularity among collectors from around the world. It is important to note that coins featuring Queen Elizabeth II will remain legal tender and continue to circulate alongside the new King Charles III coins.

The gradual replacement of the 27 billion coins currently in circulation bearing Queen Elizabeth II's likeness is necessary due to wear and tear and to meet the demand for additional coins. The Royal Mint aims to ensure a seamless transition with minimal environmental impact and cost.

Despite the rise of cashless payments, the introduction of the new King Charles III coins signifies an important moment in British history and is expected to be popular among members of the public keen to own a piece of British heritage.
