Indian Government Requests Crucial Evidence from US Authorities in San Francisco Consulate Attack Investigation

 In a major development, the Indian government has taken a significant step in the San Francisco consulate case by requesting evidence from US authorities under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT). The case revolves around an attack on the Indian consulate in San Francisco, where 45 individuals were identified as having been involved. The attack reportedly involved pro-Khalistani entities, who trespassed into the consulate and attempted to set it on fire. They also raised slogans, damaged the building, and caused injuries to officials.

Based on the investigation conducted so far by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Indian government has formally requested evidence from the US authorities. The request has been made in accordance with the MLAT, which allows for cooperation between countries in criminal investigations and legal proceedings. The evidence being sought is expected to provide crucial insights and help with the ongoing investigation into the case. The attack on the Indian consulate took place on the night of March 18 and 19, when a group of pro-Khalistani entities forcibly entered the building and tried to set it ablaze.

A case was registered immediately following the incident. However, it was not an isolated event, as violent activities were also reported on the same day, with Khalistani supporters breaking through security barriers and hoisting Khalistani flags on the consulate premises. They further caused damage to the building and harmed officials present at the scene. The NIA's probe into the case has revealed another similar incident that occurred on the night of July 1 and 2. This time, a few individuals managed to gain access to the consulate and made an attempt to burn it down. Officials were also present inside the building during this incident.

In light of the gravity of the situation, the NIA registered a case on June 16 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The registration of this case demonstrates the government's commitment to holding those responsible accountable and ensuring justice is served. To further investigate the matter, a team of NIA officials visited San Francisco in August, gathering additional evidence and gathering information about the attack.

The request for evidence from US authorities under the MLAT is expected to supplement these efforts and provide crucial leads for the ongoing investigation.
