House Rejects Resolution to Impeach Homeland Security Secretary, Split among Republicans Reveals Rift on Border Control
The House of Representatives rejects a resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, with eight Republicans joining Democrats in voting against the measure.
In a bipartisan vote, the House of Representatives rejected a resolution introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The resolution, which accused Mayorkas of violating a 2006 law regarding border control, was referred to the House Homeland Security Committee, effectively sidelining it for now.
Eight Republicans joined Democrats in voting against the measure. Greene expressed her outrage at the decision and stated that she may reintroduce the resolution in the future. The Department of Homeland Security criticized the impeachment effort, calling it baseless and a distraction from national security priorities. GOP lawmakers, including House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., expressed support for impeaching Mayorkas, citing concerns about the handling of the migrant crisis at the southern border.
However, the focus of House Republicans has primarily been on impeaching President Joe Biden rather than Cabinet members. The House of Representatives has only impeached one Cabinet member in its history, back in 1876.
