Gaza Aid Delivery Increase Applauded by UN, But Warned: Not Enough to Save Lives

The United Nations has applauded the increase in aid deliveries into Gaza resulting from a temporary truce, but warned that it is not enough to address the massive needs of the Palestinian territory. The UN children's agency, UNICEF, stated that while the aid flow to the northern Gaza Strip was the right start, it is still not sufficient to even meet the triage needs of the over two million people living in the besieged enclave.

Hospitals and aid organisations are being forced to prioritize the most urgent cases, leaving others without necessary care. Both UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) stressed that the aid needs to multiply in order to address the massive requirements. The WHO reported a massive increase in some communicable diseases in the densely populated area, with young children experiencing 45 times more cases of diarrhea than usual.

The health care system is collapsing, and without repairs and reliable access to basics like food, water, and medicine, more people will die from diseases than from the bombardment. It is crucial for the truce to be prolonged and transformed into a permanent ceasefire to prevent further destruction of homes and devastation to families. Israel's bombardment of Gaza must not resume, as it would have severe consequences for the already vulnerable population. The UN agencies emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to address the enormous needs of the Palestinian territory.
