Former Trump State Department Official Receives 70-Month Sentence for Involvement in Capitol Attack; Justice Department Seeks Heavy Toll

A former State Department official who served under former President Donald Trump has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Federico Klein, who worked in the State Department's office of Brazilian and Southern Cone Affairs, was convicted of multiple charges, including assault, civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, and misdemeanors.

The Justice Department had requested a 10-year prison sentence for Klein, along with a hefty fine. Prosecutors argued that Klein may have been motivated to participate in the attack to maintain his job as a political appointee under the Trump administration. Klein's attorney, Stanley Woodward, claimed that his client was being targeted because he was the first presidential appointee arrested in connection with the Capitol attack.
Klein had allegedly assaulted police officers, including a former US Capitol Police sergeant, during the incident. Klein's sentencing is just one of over 1,000 arrests made in relation to the January 6 riot. The highest prison sentence thus far has been handed to former Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years.
