Lawyers for former US President Donald Trump met with federal prosecutors in Washington DC on Thursday, raising speculation that he may be charged in connection with his attempts to overturn the 2020 US election. Trump had previously stated that he expected to face an indictment in the case.

The former president's attorneys, John Lauro and Todd Blanche discussed the matter with officials at the office of special prosecutor Jack Smith. While the nature of the meeting has not been disclosed, it is not uncommon for such meetings to occur before charges are filed.

Trump stated on social media that his lawyers had a productive meeting and maintained his innocence, adding that an indictment would only further harm the country. The investigation has been focused on Trump's actions in the two months following his election loss and leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Prosecutors are examining efforts by Trump's team to organize fake electors who would claim he won in key states. Prosecutors in Georgia are also investigating similar allegations. A decision on whether to indict Trump is expected in the near future. Trump is also facing charges of mishandling classified documents and falsifying business records in separate cases.
