Former PM Imran Khan's Wife Takes Legal Action Amid Fears of Poisoning in Jail

In a bid to ensure the safety of her husband, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to seek enhanced security measures in Adiala jail, fearing he could be poisoned. Khan has been in detention since August 5, after being found guilty in the Toshakhana case for failing to disclose gifts received while in government. Bushra Bibi's concerns regarding her husband's safety arose due to the possibility of food tampering.

She highlighted that he is not receiving the entitled facilities mentioned in the prison manual and cited past instances where other prisoners were provided certain privileges, such as home-cooked meals, which Khan has been denied. This treatment, she argued, is inhumane and a breach of constitutional articles. To address these issues, Bushra Bibi filed a petition with the IHC, urging the court to intervene and ensure the enforcement of court orders regarding the provision of proper facilities to Khan in Adiala Jail. She also requested the court to instruct the responsible medical officer to ensure the supply of healthy food to the former prime minister, in addition to granting him the privilege of exercising and taking walks.

However, Khan's future political aspirations were dealt a blow as in addition to his three-year prison sentence, he also faced a five-year disqualification from participating in the upcoming general elections. Although he had requested not to be transferred from Attock District Jail, Khan was moved to Adiala Jail on Tuesday. During the hearing in jail, Khan stated that he had adjusted to the Attock Jail and did not want to be transferred to Adiala Jail. He expressed his intention to ask his lawyers to withdraw the transfer application. According to the Jail Manual, Khan was entitled to facilities such as a TV, newspapers, servants, a mattress, and a chair and table in the jail.
