An explosive drone targeting the US-led anti-jihadist coalition in Iraq was shot down at the Erbil Air Base adjacent to the Kurdistan Region’s Erbil International Airport, Kurdish counter-terrorism authorities reported. The attack, claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, was launched at 9:52 PM local time and was swiftly intercepted and destroyed by the drone was shot down, with no casualties reported, as per the General Directorate of Counter Terrorism.
This follows another drone being shot down on Sunday, underscoring the increased vigilance among US and international forces stationed in Iraq and neighboring Syria, who have been targeted in over 100 attacks since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October. The surge in attacks, including from Iranian-backed militia groups, has prompted the US military to launch air strikes targeting sites used by Iran and its proxy forces in Iraq and Syria. The Iraqi Prime Minister has initiated an investigation into these attacks, which have continued to pose a threat to the safety of troops and personnel at the Erbil Air Base and other US bases in the region.
