A devastating wildfire engulfs Lahaina in Maui, Hawaii, causing massive destruction and claiming lives. Strong winds and drought conditions worsen the situation, displacing thousands and leaving a trail of destruction behind.
A devastating wildfire swept through the town of Lahaina in Maui, Hawaii, causing immense destruction and claiming at least six lives. The fire, likely ignited by human activity, quickly spread in the dry and windy conditions, reaching the historic center of Lahaina, a popular tourist destination. The fire destroyed hundreds of buildings, some dating back to the 1700s, and forced residents to flee into the ocean to escape the flames and smoke.
Authorities, including County Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. and Governor Josh Green, are working to determine the cause of the deaths and have expressed concern that the death toll may rise. Many people were injured by burns or smoke inhalation and were taken to hospitals in Maui or Oahu. The wildfire was exacerbated by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, which was passing about 500 miles south of Hawaii.
The winds made it difficult for firefighters to control the fire and carried burning embers to new areas. Additionally, the island was already dealing with drought conditions, making the vegetation more susceptible to burning. The impact of the fire has been significant, with over 2,100 people displaced and seeking shelter in evacuation centers or at Kahului Airport.
The Coast Guard rescued 14 individuals who fled into the ocean to escape the fire, and many residents described the scene as "apocalyptic." The fire destroyed numerous homes, businesses, and historic structures, causing immense loss for many residents. Acting Governor Sylvia Luke declared a state of emergency for Maui County.
