On the night of July 4th, tragedy struck the streets of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as four people were killed and four others were injured in a shooting. Police responded quickly to the scene and apprehended a male suspect wearing a ballistic vest, as well as recovering a rifle and handgun nearby.
Both juveniles were among those shot, though it is unclear whether or not they were among the dead. The shooting occurred in the Kingsessing area of southwest Philadelphia, and the aftermath was captured by WPVI video footage, showing multiple police squad cars with their lights flashing, and portions of the street cordoned off with yellow and red crime-scene tape.
As details of the July Fourth-eve gun violence were still sketchy, this shooting came a day after two people were shot dead and 28 others injured, about half of them children, in a hail of gunfire at an outdoor neighbourhood block party in Baltimore, Maryland.
Police stated they are still searching for multiple suspects in that incident. The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that there were “multiple gunshot victims” and a spokesperson for the department stated that no further details were immediately available.
This has been a frightening and saddening incident on an otherwise joyous holiday, and it serves as a stark reminder of the reality of gun violence in the United States. The police are doing their best to keep the public safe, while also making sure those responsible for this tragedy are brought to justice.
In the meantime, the citizens of Philadelphia are encouraged to be extra vigilant and to report any suspicious activity in the area. It is our collective duty to ensure that similar incidents never happen again and that justice is served.
