Crushed Car Chaos: Tractor-Trailer Overturns, Halts Traffic on I-93, Two Injured

Traffic on Interstate 93 in Wilmington, Massachusetts came to a halt on Monday morning after a tractor-trailer carrying crushed cars overturned, causing extensive delays and two individuals to sustain minor injuries. The accident occurred around 5 a.m. on the southbound side of the highway near exit 35. The overturned tractor-trailer spilled its cargo across the lanes of travel, resulting in a substantial field of debris. Aerial footage showed the severity of the accident, with one lane of southbound traffic slowly moving past the wreckage.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and the injured individuals were transported to the hospital. Fortunately, the tractor-trailer driver did not suffer any injuries. MassDOT reported that all southbound lanes were closed due to the crash, causing traffic to back up for approximately eight to nine miles. Drive times exceeded 90 minutes at one point, but have since decreased to around 60 minutes. MassDOT managed to reopen one travel lane at 7 a.m., but warned drivers that it may take several hours for all lanes to fully reopen. Heavy equipment was brought in for the cleanup, which lasted most of the morning.
A front-end loader was used to scoop up the auto parts and place them back in the trailer for recycling. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice and to check traffic conditions regularly. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious on the roads and adhering to traffic regulations to prevent accidents and disruptions.
