Violent crimes have become a daily occurrence in London. In the first four months of this year, more than 60 people lost their lives leaving bereaved members behind. While the overall crime rate in the country has been steady, knife and gun crimes in particular have surged.
London is considered as one of the safest cities in the world. With more than 500,000 cctv cameras installed across city, it has been a host to a diverse range of people. However, like any other major city in the world, London too has its problems. The city is witnessing one of the highest crime rates in decades making the preparations to tackle them look insufficient. According to Guardian, 50 cases of homicide were reported in the first three months of the current year.
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, recently attacked the government for cuts to the budgets and accused it of 'failing to protect' its own people. 'The metropolitan police are under-resourced and overstretched, he warned. The government on the other hand denies any such claim and attempts to justify the current funding. The row between government and opposition has escalated amid the tides of violence.
Amid the rocketing crime rate and news of horror, people took to streets to spread a message of peace and love. Hundreds of Londoners gathered in New Cross, south east London and marched to show their support to the families who lost their loved ones. People cutting across ages were seen dancing and singing. Many were holding placards which read 'only peace and prayer' can end hate.
