Pakistan offers Kulbhushan Jadhav to meet his wife on humanitarian grounds

In a press release, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan has offered to arrange a meeting beween Kulbhushan Jadhav and his wife. "The Government of Pakistan has decided to arrange a meeting of Commander Kulbhudhan Jhadev with his wife, in Pakistan, purely on humanitarian grounds. A Note Verbale to this effect has been sent to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, today", the press release said.


Sitharaman hailed Pakistan move to allow Jadhav to meet his wife. It is a good humanitarian gesture," she said at a press conference here when asked about Islamabad's decision. "India is making all efforts to get Kulbhushan Jadhav released from Pakistani prison. India has also approached the International Court of Justice (on the issue)," she said. (thestatesman.com)


India had requested Pakistan to let Jadhav's mother meet him in Pakistan. But that is not clear from this note verbale whether she will be allowed to meet him.



Who is Kulbhushan Jadhav?


Jadhav, a 46-year-old retired Indian Navy officer, was in April sentenced to death by Pakistan's Field General Court Martial on charges of his alleged "involvement in espionage and sabotage activities" against Pakistan. (financialexpress.com)


Pakistani military authorities announced that they had convicted Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian man who Islamabad claims is an agent of India's Research and Analysis Wing, and sentenced him to death after a closed-door court martial. (scroll.in) Jadhav, a retired Indian Navy officer, was captured in Balochistan in March, 2016.


Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that Kulbhushan Jadhav has a right to appeal against his death sentence within 60 days, even as he justified the death penalty given to the Indian national. (abplive.in)


India instituted proceedings against Pakistan, accusing the latter of "egregious violations of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations" in the matter of detention and trial of Jadhav, and sought a stay on his death sentence. (inuth.com)
